Lady Raiders tough enough

“Girls are too weak” is what you hear coming out of some guy’s mouths. Many people think that wrestling is a guy sport and that girls aren’t capable of doing it physically and mentally, well for those of you who think that are totally mistaken. As a matter of fact we have two girls here at Channel Islands that excel in that sport. Judith Reyes and Annabel Medina are sophomores who are on the girls varsity wrestling team.

Judith Reyes started wrestling when she was in 8th grade. The way that her older brother Oscar motivated her made her want to wrestle for high school. Her brother is also a former wrestler here at the islands. Reyes’s weight class is 189 with a record of 8-3. Last year Judith went to masters and placed 2nd and in State she placed 8th. Judith mentality is pretty simple “My mentality is to wrestle as hard as you can and leave the outcome on the matt” She said. After high school Reyes still hopes to wrestle and get scouted by a college. Her favorite part about wrestling is having her best friend on the team, aka Annabel. Judith would like to thank her mom Hilda Reyes and her coaches for the support, and also everyone who believed that she will go far in wrestling.

“Nothing is impossible, the word itself is impossible” is one of Annabel’s favorite quote. Medina has been wrestling since the 7th grade. Someone that she looks up to is her brother because he made it to state and always tells her to keep her head and, and that nothing can stop her. Medinas weight class is 121 and a record of 26-5 while being one of the captains. Her favorite part about wrestling is being able to make it her second family.

Both of the wrestlers least favorite part about wrestling is the conditioning! Having a best friend on the matt must be great. They motivate each other when one wants to give up or is slacking off. “Shout out to our coach Bobby, and Gabe since he works here.” said both girls.
