Kali Uchis, a Colombian-American singer-songwriter, has released two new songs from her upcoming album to give an insight of what’s to come. “Munequita” was released first on Aug. 4 while “Te Mata” has only been out for 2 weeks. Both songs will be on her new album “Orquideas,” which will be released on Jan.12, 2024.
Uchis, 29, is in a relationship with Don Toliver, a popular American rapper. She’s been around since 2012 and has many hit songs, for example “Moonlight,” “Telepatía,” “Melting,” “After the Storm,” and “Dead To Me.”
Her new song “Te Mata” talks about escaping a toxic relationship marked by neglect, but eventually, finding self worth and courage to move on. In the music video, Uchis portrays the villain, and she embraces the role, channeling the anger from the other side of the story.
“You know this one’s about really, you know when you let people hurt you and damage you and then finally you draw boundaries and now you’re the bad person.,” Uchis said during her Atlanta show from her Red Moon in Venus Tour. I think it’s a really good song and many people could relate to the experiences described. Uchis definitely stayed true to herself, didn’t change herself for fame, and shared her feelings, giving great significance to her lyrics.
Muñequita on the other hand, is pretty much the opposite of Te Mata. This song is a mix of reggaetón and Dembow Spanglish. She works with 2 other people in this song which are El Alfa, a Dominican rapper, and JT, an American rapper from City Girls.
In the verses of this song it talks about an empowered woman defined as muñeca, meaning little doll in english, she’s described this way both for her physical attractiveness and for her security and self-confidence.
Overall, “Muñekita” is an energetic and empowering anthem that encourages self-expression and self-assuredness in the face of detractors. It celebrates individuality and unapologetically embracing one’s sexuality and confidence.
These two songs that Uchis has released are definitely a work of art, they both have great meanings behind their lyrics, and it’s very exciting to think about what her other songs will be like !
