Classes are back in session and fall sports have just begun! As the new season starts, we are beginning to recognize many of our successful and outstanding student athletes.

One athlete that has captivated many would be Ricardo (Ricky) Torres, a senior at the Islands who has been on the cross country team since his freshman year. Torres is a very successful runner who has broken record after record in the Pacific View League, becoming one of the top runners in Ventura County.

Torres won the Raider Invitational at College Park last Friday with a time of 15 minutes and 29 seconds. Earlier this year, he ran a personal-best of 14:48 at the Seaside Invitational.

Though many have inspired him throughout his running career, Torres’s parents have motivated him the most, reassuring him that his hard work and dedication will lead him to a brighter future.

Not only do his parents motivate him, but he also gains inspiration from a popular YouTube personality named Rice Gum, along with one of his close friends Ronaldo Ramirez, who is on the varsity football team. He and Ramirez have been there for one another, pushing themselves to a path that will lead them to success.

“The second thing on my mind is not giving up and the first thing is winning,” Torres stated as one of the inspiring quotes that he and Ramirez live by when competing.

Torres said that he is happy to be recognized for his accomplishments in cross country, feeling proud to be granted the position of team captain and given the opportunity to motivate others who also want to succeed.

Although he claims that running for cross country is fun, there are also a few challenges Torres faces throughout the season, such as managing his time, maintaining a good GPA, and being able to spend time with his friends.

Coach Miguel Galindo said Torres will run in the Elite Championship race next Friday in Fresno.
