Father’s Day has always been the day where I celebrate two important men in my life: my dad and grandpa.
Although my dad, Roberto C. Guzman, wasn’t the best version of himself in the past, he’s done so much to change and become a better person. He’s currently attending Oxnard College to become a drug and alcohol counselor and goes to the gym almost every day after work. Not only has this improved his mental and physical health, but it’s also benefited him as a father. College has gotten him to be more understanding and involved with my and my sister’s academics.
My dad is my best friend. He always makes sure to talk to me and never fails to make jokes that make me laugh. He also always makes sure my sister and I have everything we need regarding school, clothing, and other necessities.
Everyone in my family always says that I’m his mini-me. I inherited a lot of things from my dad, one being my curly hair—even though my dad is bald now. Let’s hope I don’t inherit that. I also got my passion for cooking and baking from him, which he got from my grandma.
My grandpa, Roberto M. Guzman, is also one very important man in my life. He’s always been there for me and my siblings.
I remember he would always drive us everywhere, or just take us wherever he was going. When no one in my family was there to take care of us, he took on the job.
My grandpa is one of the kindest people I know and he never fails to go out of his way to help others. This may not be so true as of today due to his progressing Alzheimer’s disease, but he will always remain the same loving grandpa.
I remember my grandma always told me about the “dumb” things he would do just to help others. For instance, he would just give away his clothes if he saw someone needed it and never said no to helping people.
I love knowing that I’ll always have aspects of my dad and grandpa with me forever. Whether it’s my face, hair, passions, or willingness to help other people, they’ll always be a part of me.
