Trump’s State Of America

On Jan. 20, 2017, Donald J. Trump was inaugurated as the 45th President of the United States. All over the nation there were mixed emotions about his victory. With the help of social media, the news about President Trump and his actions spread like a wildfire.

Trump has been in office for almost a month now and he has decided to dive right into business by signing a few executive actions such as removing the U.S. from the Trans-Pacific Partnership, enacting a federal employee hiring freeze (except for military), and even reinstating the “Mexico City Policy” on abortion funding.

Trump is utilizing his “executive power,” something that every president dating back to Washington has done, some more than others. An executive order is an official document signed by the President that declares a government policy.

One of Trump’s most publicized executive orders is the one known as the Travel Ban.

On Jan. 27, Trump, as a national safety measure, signed an executive order “temporarily barring the entry of refugees and immigrants.” Many were detained and held up at airports as a results of that executive order, causing commotion and chaos. The  ban affected people of predominantly Muslim Nations. The countries affected are Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Libya, Yemen and Somalia. When Trump signed the order, those in the air at the time weren’t able to enter the country when they landed. Some were detained and some were sent back.

Protesters stormed the airports trying to speak for those who couldn’t. Many who were not at the scene, took their voice to Twitter.

Jennifer Lainez, a junior at CI, is not pleased that Trump is the new President. Her beliefs about the executive orders were strong.

“I think his executive orders and bans are completely unthoughtful towards the lower class,” said Lainez.

On February 5, a federal appeals court denied the U.S. government’s initial request to reinstate the immigration ban.

On Jan. 21, a day after Trump’s inauguration, many women and men around the nation participated in what was known as the “Women’s March.”

The march was a form of protest to advocate legislation and policies regarding human rights and other issues, including women’s rights, immigration reform, healthcare reform, the natural environment, LGBTQ rights, racial equality, freedom of religion, and workers’ rights.

When asked, a few students from campus expressed their opinions about Trump’s actions and his presidency.

Michelle Carballo, a senior, explains how she believes that our president is supposed to be the spokesperson for our nation, and many people today don’t agree with him.

Carballo asserts, “It has not been long since he has taken office and all he has done is pride himself in his own business, torn apart families, and exposed ignorant views on minorities.”

Yosuan Sosa, a junior, explained that he believes Trump, with all his talk of “building a wall and deporting illegal immigrants,”was acting upon all he said during his campaign as a president-elect.

Sosa adds, “To me, I still think he’s a racist, misogynist President.”
