Raiders Still Fighting to Keep Officer McCready

Officer Tami McCready has been Channel Islands’ resource officer for 16 years. However, McCready’s sergeant said that he is considering moving her to Pacifica High School, believing it’s better to rotate officers every couple of years.

Hearing this news was shocking not just to the students but to staff members and even parents. Many students and staff members signed petitions to keep Officer McCready here at the Islands.

A group of about 50 students, parents and staff members recently met with Dr. Trudy Arriaga, OUHSD’s interim superintendent, to express their concerns.

“She always participating when she can,” Earth Science teacher Mr. David Haynes said at the meeting. “She does her job and knows when to be firm and when to be a very loving person.”

Many students were hurt by the prospect of losing McCready.

“She has always been my partner,” added Ms. Darlene Johnson.

“It’s a disservice to the students here at CI because she’s a very caring and respective adult here,” history teacher Mr. Francisco Salazar says. “She looks out for the wellbeing of our students; she has a positive influence.”

McCready said this outpouring of support has not changed the mind of her sergeant.

“His take on it is that he still wants to move me,” she said. “He wants to move everybody every 2 years, but I’m the only one getting moved.”

Asked to reflect on her 16 years at CI, McCready responded, “I think the school’s improved a lot. We have the right administration, and the teachers are a huge instrument also. Nothing but positive contact.

“The CI community is a Raider family,” she added. “I appreciate the whole school fighting for me.”
CI staff has also emailed Ms. Jeri Williams, the Chief of the Oxnard Police Department, to see if they can change their minds.
