Covarrubias headed into Hall of Fame

Our very own teacher here at Channel Islands High School,  Ms. Debi Covarrubias, will be inducted into the Cameron University sports Hall Of Fame on Feb. 20.

A Rio Mesa High graduate, Ms. Covarrubias attended Ventura College for two years and then transferred to Cameron University in Lawton, Okla. Ms. Covarrubias played softball for 18 years ever since she was 4 years old until she competed her four years in college. Her positions were pitcher and backup second basemen at Ventura College and in Cameron University she was a pitcher.

Her all time stats at Cameron; Ranked third all-time in career wins(28) ,third all-time in shutouts(8), is in the Aggie program leader with most no-hitters(3).Covarrubias pitched three straight no-hitters with the first two games being perfect games. She led the team in ERA during the 1997 and 1998 season with a winning percentage of .598.

When being asked who inspired her to play her response was “Watching my older sisters play was inspirational for me. I would often play on the side during their practices.”

When she was younger she played for Bobby Box in El Rio, she fell in love with the game from Day One.

Ms. Covarrubias was a graduate assistant Coach at Cameron University for one year and head varsitycCoach at CIHS for four years. Covarrubias feels honored to be inducted to the hall of fame.

“Softball has been such a big part of my life,” she said. “To cap it off with an award such as this is a huge honor.”
